Editing a video in a project

Edit a video already in your project with AI — choose the part, pick a look, and compare the result before you keep it.

Edit a video from your project with AI: choose the part, pick a look or describe the change, and compare the result before you keep it.

Opening the editor

Open the editor in one of three places:

  • Assets — right-click a video and choose Edit video.
  • Storyboard — click Edit on a shot's video.
  • Timeline — right-click a video clip and choose Edit video.

If this device cannot open the clip, the same message you would see elsewhere asks you to relink it first, and the editor does not open.

Choosing the part

  1. The clip plays at the top of the editor. If it is 15 seconds or longer, the same trimmer used in Templates and the Sandbox appears under it: drag the highlighted part, or its two handles, to choose up to 14.5 seconds, then Play the part to check it and Use this part to confirm. Opened from the timeline, the trimmer appears for a clip of 14.5 seconds or longer, and the part can only move inside the clip's own range on the timeline.

  2. Pick a look — Anime, Claymation, Film noir, Watercolour, Oil painting, Pixel art, Snowy winter or Night-time — or write your own under What should change?. Editing a look's words moves the choice to Custom.

  3. Hover or focus Generate to see the Estimated cost, then click it. The job runs in the Job Queue, so you can close the editor while it works — the result still arrives in Assets. Opened from the timeline, Generate first checks that the part can replace the clip — for example that the clip's sound was not trimmed separately from its picture, and that neither track is locked — and if it cannot, it says what to change and charges nothing.

Comparing and keeping the result

When the job lands, the chosen part and the result play side by side — stacked one above the other on a narrow screen — with one shared play control. Try another look keeps the part you chose and runs it again with a different look.

What you keep next depends on where you opened the editor:

  • From Assets, click Done — the result is already in Assets, as a new video.

  • From a shot, click Use for this shot — the shot's video becomes the result. The video it replaces is not deleted; it stays in Assets, and Undo brings it back onto the shot.

  • From the timeline, click Replace the clip — the edited part of the clip is replaced by the result. Which sound plays there depends on the clip:

    • A clip whose sound sits on its own audio track keeps playing that original sound, and the new picture plays muted over it.
    • A clip with no separate sound track, such as a shot sent from the Storyboard, plays the result's own sound, at the clip's own volume.

If the result comes out a little shorter than the part you chose, a small gap is left in its place. One Undo reverses the whole replacement.

Your original video is never changed. If the clip on the timeline changed while the job was running, Replace the clip is refused — the result still waits for you in Assets. If a finished result could not be added to the project at all, open History: the job is listed there with its charge, and Preview result can play the video.

What's not here yet

Cropping, speed and colour changes, several parts at once, and audio-only media are not part of this editor yet.
